BY St Ignatius of Loyola
BOOK DESCRIPTION
This is a free, copyright free translation of St. Ignatius' Spiritual Exercises, so the language can be difficult in places and can be translated better for a modern audience. The Spiritual Exercises is one of the great classics of Catholic Spirituality and contain the best reference to spiritual discernment. It contains several prayer methods including meditation and contemplation, the daily examen, rules for discernment (broken up into 2 parts called first week and second week), and guidelines for making an election (a decision about what God's will is for you in a certain matter). It also contains a recommended set of meditations most based on the life of Christ.
BOOK SUMMARY
This is a free and copyright free translation of the Exercises from 1914. The Spiritual Exercises is the guidebook for spiritual directors to guide someone through the exercises. They require a certain amount of understanding to be useful. Fr Timothy Gallagher has written a number of books that explains many of the concepts. We are in the process of summarising these books on this website.
Rather than a complete summary, we copy parts of the actual book so those parts can be read on their own. This helps with integrating them with Timothy Gallagher's books and other useful resources. In some cases we have tried to make the translation more accessible for a modern reader.
This book's summary has chapters. Normally these will match the chapters of the book:BIBLIOGRAPHIC REFERENCE
