MAYO Prayer

St. Eugene said, "Make them human, make them Christian, make them saints." MAYO seeks to do exactly that.

MAYO allows anyone to be part of its projects. The projects are meant to help humanise members by using their gifts and talents in positive ways. As a student becomes more involved they may want to live out their Catholicism in deeper ways. As this process matures and they realise how good it is to follow Jesus they may wish to live out that joy their whole life. Each of these steps are really steps of deeper prayer.

MAYO seeks to run quarterly reflection sessions. These may be on a Sprint, retreat, leadership day or through this website. There is usually some explanation of prayer or a particular prayer method. Then participants are invited to answer four simple questions which help them review their current prayer life and make a decision on what to work on for the next quarter. This could also be taking up new challenges.

This is the suggest prayer program. Each person is free to go as fast or slow as they like.

FIRST STAGE (Alpha α)

Daily Prayer: at least 5 minutes of prayer at night based on Mark's gospel. Use Basic Prayer

Deeper Challenges: 10-15 minutes of prayer a night still using Mark's gospel but also starting to work on the Psalms. Use Prayer Guide and Examen OR

Night prayer which includes an examen of conscience.

SECOND STAGE (Chi χ)

Evening prayer with an examen at the start and a hymn to Our Lady at the end (the Salve Regina, which is the Oblate tradition).  Use Evening Prayer Guide.

The first stage (Alpha) aims to establish the formal side of prayer, while the second stage seeks to establish the informal, more personal side of prayer through either adoration, a chapel visit or personal reflection time, in that order of importance. The aim is to establish in small steps prayer times to build up to three prayer times of half an hour each per week. Start spiritual direction about once a month and monthly confession. Use Spiritual Direction

THIRD STAGE: Ignatian Retreat

The culmination of the spiritual formation program is an Ignatian retreat spread across the year. This is the fulfillment of the aim of MAYO, for someone to have a personal relationship with Jesus and discern God's current direction for their life and to live it out. Use Ignatian Retreat Guide
